I've always bought small cameras for taking snapshots but wanted to take it up a notch and try my hand in some real photography.

What kind of camera recommendations do you have? I really would not want to go over a $1000USD since this is just an exploration

I'm in the exact same boat here.

After viewing some of Kmar's Flickr photography, as well as having a few excursions with the girlfriend for photo snapping... really looking to buy something decent. Will be viewing this with interest

Nikon D40 with a good quality 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens. (or the Canon equivalent)

Take a look at my friends flickr page if you want to preview some D40 pictures.

the Canon might be the T1i, retail < $1000 with an 18-55mm kit lense.
i really like the Canon XSi - it's a 12MP camera i got when Circuit City bit the dust, $620 after taxes. i've spent more on lenses now
(Sigma 10-20mm, Canon 75-300mm, Canon 50mm )

THE nice thing about digital? you shoot all you want, experiment and try crazy stuff. Then delete what didn't work. if you're like me, you learn alot on your own. good luck, and when you do choose something, join the flickr group and share.

Go Nikon, whatever you do.

Personally, I have a D80, and absolutely love it.
Now that the D90 is out, is should be cheaper, but you might be better off with a D40, as ebug said.
D40 is a lot cheaper, and does nearly the same stuff as the D80.

The D80 was $800 new, before the D90 came out.
Second-hand D40s go for roughly $400 or so.

..and to prove I'm not just making shit up, some of my stuff :

Pretty much all of those were taken with my D80 and a f1.8 50mm lens.

I love my D70 ... have shot several hundred pictures with it since I got it not long ago ... my first SLR and I'm still in the experimenting stage ... have a 70-300mm lens that works well with most shots but am looking to buy a macro lens for some nifty close ups ...

What about the D60? Seems to be a bit overlooked there, Defcon... is that for a particular reason?

D40 is a whole lot cheaper than $1000 USD. I think.

There isn't anything reasonable I can't do with Nikon's least expensive D40. There is no real reason to pay more for a Nikon D60 or D80. Save your money for more important things, like another lens or flash, or just pocket the difference and enjoy a vacation.
I thinks it's mostly because the D40 is pretty much as good as the other Dx0s, and a whole lot cheaper.

I see, thanks for that.

Any 'recommendations' for the remaining £200-400 to put towards lenses, then? I'm guessing the standard D40 set-up comes with a lense that can take 'snapshots' at close-mid-midlong range without any problems. Super closeups and zoom shots I guess are more specialised and I'm probably not interested in any gear for that purpose. What about a decent, all-round fisheye? They're .

Canon an Nikon are very competitive. Most of photography is technique. The first thing you need to do is learn how to shoot. They say the camera is only 30% of a photo. Don't get caught up in the video or megapixel hype. I'd concentrate my disposable income into glass rather than the body. If you are a beginner then most entry level DSLR's are perfectly fine. You will spend a lot of time (years) with it before you even consider upgrading.

Pick up a good magazine also. Check out the articles and read the reviews, you will learn a lot. If you have a particular camera in mind post it.

Usually a package will come with a slightly zoomable lens.

If you want a good, cheap, and fast lens, get this one:

If you want that one, but even faster:
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-Nikkor … B00005LENO
Not really worth the price difference though, IMO.
Those are both fixed 50mm lenses, with a 1:1 ratio. So basically just human eye-sight with a border around it.

Good fisheye and wideangle lenses will cost at least $600 though, although you could probably find some cheaper second hand ones.

I upgraded from Canon 1000D (your Rebel) to Canon 7D. It's just perfect for all kinds of different sports that I shoot. Pricey for sure, but worth every penny. Don't think I'm gonna need a new camera for several years.
