I'm interested in the deep dark history, the early stuff and how influential its been inside and outside the genre, not that I've been really bothered to dig into it.

To me very little of the current product sounds original.

Starting roughly at the beginning:

A fairly blatant rip-off, but JMJ has some good stuff, just not very original tunes.

Tangerine Dream seem like the pinnacle to me, I don't hear much which betters it and a lot which either copies directly or is derived from it.

If anyone knows some early stuff and how it developed fire away.

This is one of the early electronic works that really blazed the trail for things to come. It's sad that most people aside from enthusiasts don't know about it, as it's really influential to practically everything we hear today.
