Hardware Pr0n
March 13th, 2007 at 5:42 pmSo the new parts for Gibson, my colocated server, showed up today. A 70 lbs. 3u server case, 2 hard drives, some cpu coolers, and a wicked awesome raid card (Areca 1230, google it.)
So, I had to transfer all the old parts that I was keeping into the new case and install the new parts as well. Here’s the after math photos:

Previous Server carcass

An overview of the “workspace” table

The front of the server. 8 hotswap sata drive bays *drool*

currently occupied by 2 150gb raptors and 2 WD RE2 400gb’ers — both sets will be in Raid 1

Taller heat sinks of the dual 285 opterons

These fans have a spot in the fan cage where the power sits so you can just swap the fan in and out without fussing with in-case wires. A joyous thing.

The current four drives all plugged in — the card has spots for up to 12 drives.

The SATA hotswap backplate interface

An overview of Gibson 2.0
I’m excited. Now Fedora just needs to finish downloading faster…

Gibson2.0 is a very fine looking machine! Keep at it, and before you know it, BF2S will be back up and be better than ever before (esp. in reliability) with Gibson2.0 backing it up! (I know this isn’t BF2S, but) +1 for the good work
As the karma might not be enough, when you get the BF2S site back up I will donate some CA$H (via paypal) as your dedication to your server, the site, and BF2S fan base deserves an equally great reward!
2007/03/14 at 2:30 pm #

Still hard to believe the whole shooting match runs from one server … well done …
2007/03/14 at 5:11 pm #
It’s a pretty beefy server
2007/03/14 at 5:50 pm #
What a pain in the ass that must have been.
And do I ask why it looks like you had computer fan mounted to the filing cabinet?
Were you herd up for a computer case at one time?
Hell, I would have done it.
By the way GJ.
2007/03/14 at 7:07 pm #
It’s Ryan here. Thought I’d post something too.
Nice pictures, great work, yet again.

it looks like you had computer fan mounted to the filing cabinet
Back in the day it was the file server … in the file cabinet! Rockin’ p3, 256mb, 40gig hd. It was my first little linux server where I got my roots. Fitting that it’s remnants held the new hotness.

2007/03/21 at 7:29 pm #
My I would have to say that in a couple of the pictures I spy a Logitech z5500 Control pod and speaker! The man knows decent sound for an unbelievable price too!!

That pool table looks just like my parents’!
I had a question about Favitars, but I didn’t see where to ask on the plugin’s website.
I get this as the name of the plugin:
” title=”Visit plugin homepage”>Favatars
I’m about to activate it, hopefully the rest works, as it’s exactly what I was hoping to find.
2007/04/01 at 5:28 pm #
Ugh, it murdered my blog,
I’m going to see if I can get it to revert somehow, or dig up a backup.
littl’ help?
2007/04/01 at 5:40 pm #
OK, I got my blog back just by changing the name on the half-installed plugin. If you have time to point me in the right direction for getting the plugin debugged, that would be very nice of you.
2007/05/14 at 11:34 pm #

I’m not jealous. Grrrr!! There poor old me with a little old AMD64 and a HP DL140. Guessing you get free colocation, what with going from 1u to 3u.
Anyway nice kit. I would have used Seagate HDD tho really. And had RAID-10
Meh.. Still cool. No-one these days build server. Even though it is fun
2007/06/06 at 5:42 pm #
kids and their toys..
real server: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/bladecenter/
real storage: http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/storage/news/center/disk/enterprise/
that is a nice crontroller though, but i’d rather go RAID10 instead of straight 1 and used four raptors.
2007/06/06 at 7:55 pm #
Well, anonymous, if you’d like to donate $25,000 I’d be more than happy to upgrade the machine.
2007/06/10 at 12:06 pm #
I dont think bf2s needs 512 tb of data. Jeff’s machine is nice enough already. But hey theres nothing wrong with a bf2s supercomputer
2007/06/15 at 8:50 am #
I think anyone would like 125TB but V.V. few people would need that. IBM… yuck.. Sun Microsystem
Jeff you must have made a bit on the site to afford that anyway!
2007/07/07 at 11:12 am #
Wow! Very Nice Man!
2007/07/19 at 8:26 pm #

2007/07/19 at 10:18 pm #

2007/07/28 at 2:33 pm #
Don’t scuff the felt!!
2007/07/28 at 3:25 pm #
Man, that table spent a winter…outside. The quality of the table/felt is over very little concern. Heh.
2007/10/09 at 2:51 pm #
All this and it still failed… :/
2007/10/09 at 2:57 pm #

2007/10/10 at 5:17 pm #
